Does anyone have a preschool recommendation based on real-life experience? They all seem to make these fabulous claims about how wonderful they are and how they alone can be credited for setting up a child's early learning skills and success. Sure, maybe. But ultimately, the proof is in the pudding, right? If you've had a great preschool experience and your kid is officially a kindergarten genius, I'd love to learn more.

Music Therapy enrichment corp is offering a music classes...5 classes for 25$. We had a recent field trip there and the kids loved it!! A 30-minute music class for the kids, with a grown up accompanying them. They provide a variety of music-making experiences in class, including singing, finger plays, instrument playing, and movement to music. They require a minimum of 3 children (ages 9 mos-5 years) and can have up to 10 at a time. Kids under 9 months old are free.

The 2013-2014 Field Trip Committee is looking for volunteers!

Host a Lunch Bunch!!

The Field Trip Committee hosts weekly Lunch Bunch events at local playgrounds throughout the summer. Lunch Bunch is basically an open playgroup/lunch date at a local park. As host, you commit to choosing the date and location. You are then at the park from at least 11:30-12:30 with snacks and beverages (which the committee will provide). Those attending do not need to RSVP, just show up. It is also encouraged that people pack the rest their lunch. We will begin planning this summer's Lunch Bunch schedule very soon!

Plan a field trip or two!!

Have an outing you love to do with your family? Why not plan it as a field trip for the WECPTA? We are looking for a couple more members to help plan outings for next year. It's a low pressure commitment. You basically plan whatever field trips you are interested in at whatever time is convenient for you. We will begin discussing fall field trips this summer.

I'm looking for someone who would be interested in cleaning my house while my kids sleep and then watching them when they wake up from their naps, M-F from about 1:30 - 5:30, while I work from home. (I have been drowning in work and just can't keep up with the wash and daily cleaning of kitchen, toys, etc.!) I also wanted a backup for my regular nanny, so that when she misses work here I don't have to miss work, but I really want someone with am emphasis on cleaning as well. Westlake Night with the Monsters

Looking for something to do Saturday afternoon? Join us for a Charity Hockey Game this Saturday, November 17th at 1 PM at Rocky River Hamilton Ice Arena. It will be in honor and support of Anthony Kashi, a peewee hockey player from Parma who is dying of inoperable brain cancer.

There will be a bake sale and donations will be collected. The money will be administered by the Firefighters' Community Credit Union in a special account called "Team Kashi". All money collected will go (1st) towards Anthony's care and treatment and then (2nd) upon Anthony's death, the balance will be transferred to St. Jude's Hospital for childhood cancer research.

There is no charge for admission. Please come and support this young man.

Hi Ladies,

Mark your calendars! The Preschool Fair is Tuesday, October 16th at Parkside Intermediate School. Each year we invite local area preschools to set up a booth advertising their school. It is a great way to quickly get information from over 12 schools in the area. This year we will be inviting local children's activities to come and set up a booth as well. We would love help brainstorming children activities to invite to this event. Who would you like to meet with and learn more about. At the top of my head, I am thinking of LENSC, Gymboree Play, The Little Gym, Kindermusik, dance studios (Lisa Wilhelm, emjaez, Nancy Larson). Do you have other suggestions for us?

Also, if you know of any new preschools to the area that we should include, please let us know. I just drove by "Bee Your Baby Day Care and Preschool" in North Olmsted and have added them to our list.

How many would be interested in doing a mom's boot camp work out class once or maybe twice a week at 9:30 am? I'm thinking Tuesday and/or Thursday morning.

We'd do the class outside at someone's house, this way the kids could run around and play while we get a workout in.

I've already got a trainer who would be willing to do this for $7 per session with a minimum of 5 moms.

A friend's father, a Cleveland fireman, had a puppy jump in his car the other day and he took it home. They already have 2 dogs, collie ad chiwuawa (sp??). The dog is very good with the other 2 dogs, looks slightly underfed, but in otherwise good condition. They cannot find a no kill shelter and cannot keep another dog. Anyone interested? Six-year-old judge gives thumbs-down to healthy foods at Let's Move! cooking showcase...
First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign to get kids to eat healthy food has a long way to go. A little boy judging a cooking battle on Tuesday night, designed to promote the Let's Move! campaign, repeatedly spit out bites of his meal, which was created by Top Chef hostTom Colicchio and 3 other James Beard Award-winning chefs. Austin, the six-year-old judge, gave the dishes made by some of the country's best chefs the lowest possible scores as White House Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass, emcee for The Great American Family Dinner Challenge, made light of the situation to an audience of hundreds. "Let's give Austin's mom a round of applause," Kass said. "She's got her hands full!"

The crowd of anti-obesity activists filling the ballroom in DC's Omni Shoreham hotel laughed and applauded.

Austin spit out bites of each successive dish he was served as the audience watched on two forty-foot video monitors. The laughter grew as the acclaimed chefs reacted with mock horror when the boy circled frowning faces on his score sheet, awarding the worst scores.(Above: Kass and another child judge watch Colicchio cook)

"These are recipes that families can actually use," Kass had announced as the contest started. The recipes had been pre-vetted before the contest by two nutritionists who were introduced to the crowd. The showcase battle was the capper to the first day of a national childhood obesity summit from Partnership for a Healthier America, the non-profit that supports Mrs. Obama's campaign. She gave the keynote address on Wednesday.

Austin and his mom sat beside another family onstage at a dinner table, and were personally served by the chefs, who created their three-course dinners with just $10 of ingredients--a budget a family on Food Stamps would use. The teams had 30 minutes to work in two gleaming cooking stations. No lover of a frisee salad with avocado and shallot dressing and glazed chicken thighs with sauteed fennel, garlic, mint, chives and parsley created by the chef-team of Boston's Ming Tsai of Blue Ginger restaurant and Holly Smith of Cafe Juanita in Kirkland, WA, Austin spit his bites into his napkin. He also unceremoniously spat out a shaved carrot and apple salad from Colicchio and teammate Maria Hines of Tilth restaurant in Seattle, as well as their jello and buttermilk dessert.(Above: Kass holds up a scoring sheet with smiley and frowny faces, and Austin assures him he wants the frowny faces)

The boy looked dubious as Tsai presented him with a yogurt parfait with cinnamon-covered cashews on top. "It's vanilla ice cream with rock sugar," Tsai joked. Despite comedic pleas from Kass and the chefs, Austin wanted nothing to do with the healthy dishes, though he seemed to like--or at least tolerate--a beef and broccoli dish offered by Team Colicchio. The other family ate their meal with no spitting action. All were selected as judges after winning a sweepstakes from Parents and Ser Padres magazines, co-sponsors of the event.

After Austin gave the thumbs down to his dishes, Tsai ran back to his cooking station and grabbed a huge knife and pretended he was going to stab himself, much to the audience's further amusement (above).

The chefs had used only the kind of equipment that a family might have: A toaster, a blender, a microwave, and a regular oven. At a press conference before the event, Kass and the chefs spoke of the importance of cooking healthy foods for kids, starting as early as possible to ensure children will develop a lifelong love affair with vegetables.

"Throw enough garlic and scallions on...and kids will love" whatever is cooked, Tsai told reporters. Apparently the theory does not have uniform applications.

"America's chefs are at the center of the most important battle to change the future," Kass said.

Colicchio and Hines won the competition, scoring 95 points to Tsai and Smith's 84. Colicchio has visited the White House, and is a big supporter of the Let's Move! campaign. Last year, Kass appeared on a special episode of Top Chef devoted to school lunches. The three other chefs all said they work in their communities on healthy eating initiatives, too. Walmart provided the two competition kitchens, and All-Clad provided the cookware. The two families would be taking it home, but perhaps Austin's family will use it for something other than cooking. Both corporations are partners for the Let's Move! campaign.

The audience had their own dinner cooked by James Beard Award-winning chefs Anne Quatrano, Floyd Cardoz, Koren Grieveson, and Michel Nischan before the showcase.

cut down your Christmas Tree

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

During the babysitting co-op meeting last week, we talked about traditions we had and our family makes a day of cutting down our Christmas tree every year. I mentioned the place we go is very reasonable and pretty close by...but I told everyone it was Uncle Tom's, and it's FRED'S TREE FARM (anyone see how I could have confused these? ugh!) Anyway, the address is 5631 Mack Dr. Valley City. It is 30 minutes from our house. There are acres and acres of trees and many varieties. I think we paid about $15-$20 last year for a tree.

The only thing I would recommend is taking a wagon or sled to pull the kids (I MEAN THE TREE!! :-) They have saws for your use. There is no shop or restaurant, no horse drawn sleigh...just quiet peaceful space!

I'm trying to avoid trashing it, since they are now banned in U.S. It's a beautiful Pali wood crib (with matching changing table) that cost several hundred dollars new. The German Club in Olmsted Township (South of Great Northern Mall on Columbia Rd) has a great soccer program. Claire has been doing it for the last two sessions. And it's a great program.

They are starting a new 2-3 year old kid and parent program (Pre-Tiny Tots) on Thursday's from 10 am - 10:40 am.

The 3-4 are kids only 5:10 to 6 pm. And the 5-6 are 6:10 to 7:00 pm.

All the sessions are held in the indoor soccer field. I've been very impressed with the program. The next session starts Sept. 16th.

We've gone in to find her twice in the past three days on her changing table and think she's climbing out of the crib and onto the table. Several years ago we started a group of moms that met for drinks and dinner on a regular basis and laughed and listened to each other. We all had a child struggling in some manner and it was wonderful to share our worry, our joy when they accomplished a new goal and to share information on doctors, therapies and camps or programs.

That group has now become Connecting For Kids! Our goal is to connect moms to the right people and programs so they can help their child grow. I invite you to check out our new website connectingforkids.org and to join our group today!

We will offer a speaker series designed for parents and our first speaker will answer the question "How to get your kids to do what YOU say." We will have coffee and conversation nights and mom's dinner out. We will have a list of events and programs offered around town too!

It is a free organization until November so that you can join and give us feedback on what will make the group work for you. After November, we will be asking for $25 annually to help pay for the website costs.

Car DVD player

Our DVD player in the car is not working and instead of paying around $500 to get it replaced, I was considering just getting a portable DVD player for the car.

Thanks for a great year in the WECPTA! I had a great time as your 1st VP, and now I am moving on to new adventures.

I have decided to run for school board. The current board is very divided, and I plan to bring cohesiveness to this divided board. As it is, they are having a hard time making decisions and getting work done.

We went to Panini's last night for dinner and found that it was kid's night! You receive 2 FREE kids meals with each entree purchased. We were seated in a separate room and watched movies during dinner. Saw the end of Willy Wonka and the beginning of Peter Pan. The kids even got popcorn as an appetizer!

Alex said it was awesome and Anna enjoyed it too-especially the popcorn.

Free Jenny Lind drop-side crib to first taker!

I'm purging my spare bedroom of all my old baby gear and the one thing I can't sell or donate is my boy's Jenny Lind drop-side crib (see photo below). ALL drop-side cribs have been recalled so, unless someone wants it, I have to trash it and that seems like such a huge waste!

It's in great condition. Cherry finish. Makes a great extra crib for Grandma's House, etc.

The Oberlin Choristers offers children an amazing opportunity to have fun, learn important musical skills, sing high-quality choral music, and travel. The Oberlin Choristers Touring Choir will be traveling to Ireland this summer!

My rescue group, Middleburg Heights Animal Foundation (MHAF), is in need of reliable & experienced canine foster homes to provide housing, daily care, training, socialization and TLC for dogs in training of becoming Psychiatric Service Dogs for Veteran's with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Training is provided by K9 Coaches in the form of weekly classes at their facility in Berea; this is at no charge to the foster home.

LIve near Holly Lane? Help the students win extra recess time and recycle at the same time!

We are asking all the families (and friends) of Holly Lane to start collecting PAPER ONLY that can be recycled. The items that can be recycled in our large green and yellow ABITIBI bins located on the west end of the building, are newspapers, phone books, junk mail, catalogues and magazines. Food wrappers, boxes and cardboard are not able to be recycled in these bins.

The Peace Force and students at Holly Lane are about to embark on a recycling challenge for the Month of March. The goal for the month of March is filling both ABITIBI bins by March 31. (We know that part of this time the children are on spring break.) If we fill them, the children will be given an extra 10 minutes of recess on a day chosen by the principal. The ABITIBI company with also pay double for our efforts.

Veteran’s Best Friend seeks support for the Veteran men and women who suffer with some form of psychological condition and finding homes for shelter & homeless animals so that both may live in dignity as they embark on their journey together. The goal of Veteran’s Best Friend is to place appropriate dogs and provide the necessary training so that the dog can be the Veterans’ service dog. We view this goal as a win-win for both the dog and Veteran involved. Not only does such a union benefit the dog and Veteran, but it also benefits the community by helping the Veteran. Many Veterans that suffer from psychological conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder find daily activities very challenging, tasks like going to the store or even work can disable them.

For a long time the answer has been medications, but such treatments can be further limiting, have undesired side-effects and long-term use can cause health issues for the Veteran. The use and support of a Service Dog is as natural as it can get, with the hopes of reducing the medications used and helping the Veteran regain their freedom…by having the confidence to go out in public settings with their canine companion.

Veteran’s Best Friend is seeking funds for the acquiring of appropriate dogs, the training needed to make them Service Dogs and Vest attire for the dogs. Veteran’s Best Friend is for the Veteran to do the training themselves with the help of a Trainer.

MILK events?

Hello ladies,

I am looking for some feedback from you all regarding MILK events/open playgroups.

MILK events are monthy open playgroups for all members of the WECPTA. They are usually held at local parks, members homes, or local attractions (LENSC, Playground World, etc).

Attendance is VERY low at these events. The most popular event is when we go to Playground World ... and really that is just like a field trip.

I am wondering if we should continue to have Open Playgroup/MILK events for the 2011-2012 WECPTA year.

What do you think? Will you miss these if we discontinue them next year?

I am proposing that we drop MILK events and have the person in my position just be in charge of organizing structured Playgroups. This could create extra budget money for other parts of the WECPTA. Plus, I think the Field Trip committee does a great job organizing so many events, I don't think people feel like they need an open playgroup/MILK event.

I saw you were the President of the Westlake ECPTA and I was hoping you might be able to share a message with your membership. I'm a member at John Knox Presbyterian Church in North Olmsted. Our senior high youth group (several of whom attend Westlake HS) is having a parent's day out this Saturday, 12/11 from 9a-4p. The cost is $5 per child, per hour, with a family max of $15/hour. All the proceeds are to benefit the youth group mission trip to Nicaragua next summer.

I will be there supervising all day, and I am a nanny with current infant/child first aid & CPR certification. We have a great group of teens who are wonderful with children, and least 4 of them will be there every hour of the day Saturday. JKPC is at the corner of Great Northern Blvd. and Lorain Rd. - very close to Great Northern! I have been to the library with them often but now that they are beginning to read, I feel overwhelmed by all the books to choose and the ones I we have tried have been disappointing. Just went to Riverstone Tavern in Valley City last night for dinner and it was delicious!! Just a 20-25 minute ride straight down Columbia, then right on Center Rd.(303). The menu is very diverse, long bottled beer menu, and margaritas are $3.00 on Thursdays! Nice atmosphere, casual, and everything is well priced. I had filet, hubby had jumbalaya (tons of shrimp), an appetizer, a beer, and of course, a margarita for $50...not bad! Not for larger groups but great for a date night!

In search of heavy duty train / lego table

So I foolishly passed up a half dozen of these at the fall consignment sales, but we're now thinking our 6- and 8-year old girls, and twin 2-year old boys would love a heavy duty hardwood table that doubles as a lego and train table. We don't want the smaller or flimsy/plastic ones--we're looking for the big ones that are around 47-50 inches long and sit low to the ground with undertable storage drawers. Anyone know of one for sale? The pickins on Craigslist are slim right now.

Well, we finished our move to Westlake! Yay! Unfortunately, we need to get rid of our dog. It is just a difficult house to get her in and out and where to keep her during the day (I am a freak about hair... my own issues :-)). She is 4 years old and very big (about 100 lbs) very sweet and great with kids. She comes with lifetime training through Bark Busters that is transferrable to new owners. I was at Giant Eagle yesterday and they're having a Scavenger Hunt for kids in the store Friday, Oct. 22, 6-8p.m. (Water Tower location). Wear costumes, bring a treat bag, pick up and solve clues to get to the next destination...pictures at the end! Sounded like fun for the little ones! They told me to arrive around 6:30 because it's very crowded initially.

Just had someone stop by our offices selling sheets of coupons to the Indians games.

Each sheet has coupons for:
* 4 free game tickets
* 5 buy one/get one
* $200 off private suite rental
* free meeting room & terrace club passes for use prior to a game
* Sunday fun bunch four pack (four Sunday tickets for $52 which includes $40 in food/merchandise)

Each coupon allows you to get a $36 ticket for free (or buy one and get one for free). If you want a better seat location, you can pay the difference. You can use the coupons at the box office or a team shop anytime this season (except July 26-July 29). Cost was $35. If interested, contact Matt at 419-705-0562.

does the $80 fee cover both Fall & Spring?
How many weeks do they play?
Is it a one time uniform purchase fee?
