What is Mom's Boot Camp?

A few people have asked me what Mom's Boot Camp is, so I thought I might explain more here.

Mom's Boot Camp is a one hour high intensity interval workout. It is for all ranges of workout abilities (though I would suggest for those who are pregnant, if you haven't been working out before, this is not the place to start). The workout is lead by a personal trainer Jen Ference. It costs $7 per session.

We start with some cardio, than stretching. Than move into the workout. The first session was do as many exercises as you could for 30 seconds. For example, do as many lunges for 30 seconds, than we moved to bicep curls with resistance bands, etc. The second session we teamed up into groups of 3 and the group had to do 150 exercises, 1 person working out while the other 2 rested, and rotate through to get the 150 done.

Again, we have all workout abilities. I few joked this was there first workout since having kids, so no one needs to feel like they need to be in great shape to do Mom's Boot Camp.

While we workout the kids have fun running around playing. We do have a babysitter there who helps keep the kids out of trouble, but if you have to stop and deal with a child, that's fine, we are all mom's (including the trainer!). We do ask those who attend to kick in $1-2 to the babysitter to help with the cost.

If you are interested in joining, we meet Tuesday morning at 9:30 am. We rotate houses, so drop me an e-mail to get on the e-mail list. For your first workout, please show up a few minutes early to do the paper work.

Dog Days of Summer

I'm reposting Jen Grimes great post about summer heat! Please keep heat stroke in mind while we make it through this summer heat!

We've already seen a record number of 90+ degree days and it's not even July yet! With the 'Dog Days of Summer' still ahead of us, the possibility of more hot weather exists.

It's especially important to keep an eye on the little ones who are not as good at recognizing changes in their body temperatures. Heat stroke is the most severe of the heat-related injuries. Signs of heat stroke include:

very high temperature (over 104 degrees);

hot, dry, red skin

lack of sweating

confusion

deep breathing

possibly unconsciousness

The question is how to protect our children from reaching the point of a heat stroke. First and foremost, make sure that the child does not get dehydrated. Kids need to replenish with fluids regularly, preferably with water, even if they do not feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks since those can actually cause kids to lose fluids. Give the kids a break from the heat every 30-40 minutes. Finally, dress kids in light, loose-fitting clothing that allows sweat to evaporate.

Taking some of these precautions into account will help everyone enjoy the final days of summer!

Due to low turnout we will be suspending the Walking Club on Wednesday nights for the moment. If you are still interested in participating in walking club please feel free to contact me as to what days and times that would work best and whether you prefer to walk with or without kids. This way maybe we can pick a better time and day that will work for more people.

This info is available from Safe Kids

www.safekids.org

Top tips to keep your kids safe on Halloween

For parents and children:

Children under 12 should trick-or-treat and cross streets with an adult.

Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Parents should remind children to watch for cars that are turning or backing up.

Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Walk, don't run, across the street.

For drivers:

Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

Anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day so you can spot children from greater distances.

Remember that costumes can limit children's visibility and they may not be able to see your vehicle.

Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Costumes and Treats

Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and choose light colored costumes to improve visibility.

Choose face paint and make-up instead of masks, which can obstruct a child's vision. Look for non-toxic designations when choosing Halloween makeup.

Avoid carrying sticks, swords, or other sharp objects.

Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights in order to see better, as well as to be seen by drivers.

Liquid in glow sticks is hazardous, so parents should remind children not to chew on or break them.

Check treats for signs of tampering before children are allowed to eat them. Candy should be thrown away if the wrapper is faded or torn, or if the candy is unwrapped.

Safe Kids Are Seen on Halloween

Decorate your children's costumes with reflective materials. Give them flashlights and glowsticks to carry in order to see better, as well as be seen by drivers.

Important Safety Information - Westlake Break-Ins

A number of break-ins have been occurring in the City of Westlake recently. In an exchange with an Auxiliary Police Officer, it appears as if a number of these break-ins are taking place during the late afternoon / early evening hours, including Fridays and Saturdays.

In response to this, the Auxiliary Officers will be increasing patrols in neighborhoods.

Please pay special attention as holiday parties may give opportune time for a car / individuals to go unnoticed in a neighborhood.

Please DO NOT HESITATE to contact the WPD if you suspect anything suspicious in your neighborhood, i.e. strange cars, people using things to carry items which are unusual (pillowcases, etc.), 'solicitors' without approved City documents. The non-emergency number is 440-871-3311. For an emergency and / or dangerous situation, call 911.

Please review the following information from the Westlake Police Department as to how to further protect yourself and your home:

http://www.cityofwestlake.org/police/seasonalsafety.aspx#holidays

http://www.cityofwestlake.org/police/safetyinthehome.aspx

The Westlake Police Department also provides residents with useful programs such as Vacation House Watch. If you will be away over the holidays, consider utilizing this program:

http://www.cityofwestlake.org/police/services.aspx#vacation

The 'Dog Days' of Summer

We've already seen a record number of 90 degree days during the month of July. With the 'Dog Days of Summer' still ahead of us, the possibility of more hot weather exists.

It's especially important to keep an eye on the little ones who are not as good at recognizing changes in their body temperatures. Heat stroke is the most severe of the heat-related injuries. Signs of heat stroke include:

very high temperature (over 104 degrees);

hot, dry, red skin

lack of sweating

confusion

deep breathing

possibly unconsciousness

The question is how to protect our children from reaching the point of a heat stroke. First and foremost, make sure that the child does not get dehydrated. Kids need to replenish with fluids regularly, preferably with water, even if they do not feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks since those can actually cause kids to lose fluids. Give the kids a break from the heat every 30-40 minutes. Finally, dress kids in light, loose-fitting clothing that allows sweat to evaporate.

Taking some of these precautions into account will help everyone enjoy the final days of summer!

Check us out next month for an article featuring Dr. Sandra Hong, an allergist and immunologist from the Cleveland Clinic. We will also be featuring an allergy-friendly recipe.

Firework Safety for the 4th of July

With the 4th of July coming up, fireworks are sure to be a part of many gatherings. SAFE KIDS has put out the following recommendations when using fireworks / when fireworks are nearby:

Only adults should handle fireworks.
Even sparklers aren’t safe for small children. They burn at the temperature of a household match and can ignite hair and clothing. Tell children that they should leave the area immediately if their friends are using fireworks and keep a bucket of water handy.

Discuss safety procedure with your children. Teach children "stop, drop and roll" if their clothes catch fire. Make sure they know how to call 9-1-1, and show them how to put out fireworks by using water or a fire extinguisher.

Read labels and carefully follow directions. All fireworks must carry a warning label describing necessary safety precautions. Inspect firecrackers for leaking powder, loose fuses or poorly attached bases. Avoid such firecrackers as well as those that appear to have been wet, then dried.

Never use fireworks indoors.

Be sure spectators are out of range before lighting fireworks.

Never aim or throw fireworks at another person.

Never place your face or any other body part over fireworks.

Never try to re-ignite fireworks that malfunction.

Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves and flammable materials. Never shoot them in metal or glass containers.

Better yet - Join everyone at Clague Park at dusk for a spectacular show! Happy 4th of July!!!
